Seegmiller Eye Tutorial by daleicious Seegmiller Eye Tutorial by daleicious
To try to improve my painting skills I bought a great book on Digital Painting by Don Seegmiller ("Digital Character Painting using Photoshop CS3").

This is the first "paint-along" I did from the book. It helped me produce the nice skin tones in my Harry Potter vs. The Punisher picture ([link]).

I hope to do more work from this book as it really seemed to improve my technique.

Cheers,
D

whoa, if the book helped you to paint that real, I think I might need to purchase it... great job.

Thanks Tragicflaw - yes, if you can find the time to follow it, it certainly helped me lots. But I need to go back to it again soon... I've forgotten much of what I learned, and I haven't been practicing enough... it's easy to forget the process if one doesn't practice regularly!

It's great stuff isn't it? I still need to work my way through a bunch of pictures, but I've already learned so much. I wish I could spend my day working on this stuff.

I really love your Olli pic: [link]

Peeps should check it out.

Sorry to hear that... I guess the prices are pretty high, especially considering the exchange rates.

No. It's unfortunate that it's expensive but I still don't want to cheat the author. I don't have a digital copy anyway.

Note that there are plenty of free tutorials to be found on the internet which provide similar information as can be found in the Seegmiller book. Some sources are fantastic, such as the digital art tutorial section here on dA [link] or the ConceptArt.org tutorials forum [link] or you might even try the Photoshop section of good-tutorials.com [link]

All great resources to help you learn or improve your digital art.

Thanks popstrel - it was really fun to learn how to paint like this - never thought I could do it.

And... likely I still can't, unless I'm working from a tutorial... but I know I have it in me at least.

PS Mac is pretty adorable. Cheers!

Thanks Heruman! Yeah, it's a great book - highly recommended! The only downside is that he tends to skip some of the fundamentals, which I'm lacking, so it's sometimes hard to know WHY he paints what he paints. I can simulate the results but I'd like to learn more about the reasoning behind it. Still, definitely worth a read!

But you need a tablet right?

:icondaleicious:

I think that would be best. I used a tablet PC (er, convertible) for this... which allows me to draw right on the screen. In the past I used a Wacom Graphire, which I purchased at Best Buy for a relatively reasonable price. I've heard of some people that use only a mouse to paint on the computer, but I think it would be quite difficult. I don't think the techniques Seegmiller describes would be effective outside of the computer unfortunately. I often wish I'd spent more time learning classical techniques.

Hmm i understand. I dont have a tablet, and for me, coloring with the mouse is horribly difficult xD. I just stay with traditional art right now ^^
